Maundy Thursday – April 5th
Candlelight “Tenebrae” Service: 6:30 pm
Easter Sunday – April 8th
Sunday Morning Worship: 9:00 am
We began the season of Lent with a special Ash Wednesday service in February, and now we approach “Holy Week”—the week leading up to Easter. We will of course be celebrating Palm Sunday with our regular Sunday morning service at 9:00 am, complete with our kid’s choir processing with palm branches to remind us Christ’s entry into Jerusalem.
A second special Holy Week service will be a Candlelight Tenebrae and Communion Service on “Maundy” Thursday, April 5th, at 6:30 pm. The “tenebrae” service uses darkness and the successive extinguishing of candles to focus our attention on the Last Supper of Jesus with his disciples, and the suffering of Christ in the Garden of Gethsemane and on the cross. There must be Christ’s death, before there can be a resurrection. There must be his suffering and humiliation before there can be his Easter morning victory. The Maundy Thursday service will help us to remember the darkness of Christ’s death which comes before the light of Easter morning. One frequent question about this service is, what does “Maundy” mean? The answer is a simple one: the word “maundy” is a variation on the Latin word for “commandment,” and refers to the words that Jesus used in John 13:34 while washing his disciples’ feet at the Last Supper —“A new commandment I give unto you, that you love one another as I have loved you.”
And of course, no Holy Week would ever be complete without a triumphant resurrection celebration on Easter morning. We will have our regular morning worship services at 9:00 am. Please consider joining us as we celebrate and worship the life, death, and resurrection of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ during Holy Week.
